In this talk we will explain the main areas in which data science is based: computing, insights, machine learning and business. We will explain also the main differences between machine learning and statistics, and which are the current roles and areas of influence of statistics within data science.
Machine learning is a discipline that was incubated in the 50s and 60s, strongly linked to the emergence of computers. It is a blending of computation, statistics, probability and optimization. The main difference with respect to Statistics is its focus: statistics is oriented to understand and explain random processes, while the main goal in machine learning is to prediction and the processes involved on it.
