Magnetic resonance spectroscopy allows in vivo studies metabolite profiles in specific locations in the body non-invasively, contributing to the understanding of biochemical processes, consecutive with its use in clinical diagnosis. The characteristics of the spectra can help to distinguish different degrees of physiological or psychological injury in diseases such as cancer or Alzheimer's disease, respectively.

The localization techniques are classified into two groups depending on the number of independent volumes spectra obtained from a single experimental measurement: single voxel spectroscopy (MRS), which provides better spectral quality and multivoxel or image spectroscopic (MRSI) offers higher spatial resolution.
